Born “Johannes Bjørnesen Amland” on 9 Mar 1847 in Skånevik, Hordaland, Norway, son of Bjørne Johannesen Amland and Ingeborg Pederstter Tegland. He came to America with his parents and two siblings on “Harmonie”, which sailed from Stavanger, Rogaland, on 13 May 1849 and arrived in New York on 3 Jul 1849. They came to Fox Township, Kendall County, Illinois. Civil War: Farmer. Age 18. Gray eyes, brown hair, dark complexion, 5’7”. Enlisted for three years on 2 Jan 1864 at Joliet. Mustered there the same day. Private. Mustered out 11 Jul 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky. Post war: Married in Nov 1870 to Maren Knudson. Five children. They moved to Minnesota, where he became a dry goods merchant in Renville and later in Willmar. He died in Grand Forks, North Dakota, on 19 Mar 1925 and was buried in Willmar, Minnesota.
