Born “Halvor Halvorsen Kjeldalen” on 8 Jan 1841 in Hjartdal, Telemark, Norway, son of Halvor Olsen Kjeldalen and Anne Sørensdatter Hovland. He came to America with his parents and seven siblings on “Lolland”, sailing from Larvik and arriving in New York on 14 Aug 1848. They came to Wisconsin to Walworth County, then in 1851 to Columbia County, and in 1860 to the Winchester settlement in Winnebago County. Civil War: Age 21. Laborer. Unmarried. Blue eyes, light hair, fair complexion, 5’8½”. Enlisted for three years at Neenah, Winnebago County, Wisconsin, on 23 Sep 1861. Enlistment credited to Winchester township. Mustered 18 Oct 1861 at Madison, Wisconsin. Private. Took part in General Curtis’ Arkansas campaign in 1862; General Davidson’s Missouri campaign in 1862 and 1863; General Grant’s Mississippi campaign in 1863. He was in the battles of Port Gibson on 1 May 1863, Champion Hills 16 May 1863, Big Black River bridge on 17 May 1863. Wounded in the assault on Vicksburg, Mississippi, on 22 May 1863, a gunshot to his face. He was in hospital after that. Discharged from the service at St. Louis, Missouri, on 30 Sep 1863 because of his “gun shot wound”. Died soon after the war. Brother of soldiers Soren, Hans and Kittel.
