WI 15th Inf Co A. Residence: Boone County, Illinois. Born 2 Jan 1837 at Seljord, Telemark, Norway, a son of Knut Hansen Tveiten [1791-1849] and Anne Evensdatter Skori [1794-1885]. Came with his parents to America in 1842. Civil War: Unmarried. Enlisted for three years on 15 Oct 1861 at Chicago, Illinois. Mustered 15 Nov 1861 at Madison, Wisconsin. Sergeant. Sick in hospital in Mound City, Illinois. Reported on 3 Jun 1862 to be on home leave. Assigned to the division supply train 16 Aug 1863. Sick in hospital in Knoxville, Tennessee since 22 Feb 1864. Wounded in the battle of New Hope Church, Georgia, 27 May 1864 and was left on the battlefield. He was taken up by rebel troops and held prisoner. Was still absent as a prisoner of war at time of muster out of his Regiment. Was crippled the rest of his life. Was made a Brevet (Honorary) Captain on 22 May 1867 to rank from 27 May 1864 “in recognition of distinguished gallantry displayed by him at the battle of Dallas (New Hope Church) where although wounded five times he refused to leave the fields and finally fell into the hands of the enemy, he having advanced so far forward that it was impossible for his Regiment to reach and save him”. Survived and was released on 15 Apr 1865. Post war: Married 22 May 1866 in Boone County, Illinois. Died 18 Dec 1882 at Furnas County, Nebraska. Buried there in Cambridge Cemetery.
