WI 33rd Inf Co E. Residence: Spring Valley, Rock County, Wisconsin. Born 1 Mar 1846 in Hallingdal, Norway, a son of Neils E. Haugen and Carrie Nelson. They came to America to Rushford, Minnesota, in 1846. Civil War: Farmer. Age 18. Unmarried. Blue eyes, dark hair, light complexion, 5’3”, heavy build. Enlisted for three years on 20 Aug 1862 at Janesville, Wisconsin. Mustered 18 Oct 1862 at Camp Utley, Racine, Wisconsin. Bounty paid at muster $25 (of $100 total). Private. Took part in 17 battles. Wounded but stayed with his unit. Note written in the unit’s final payroll reads “This soldier has been in all the engagements and in all the Expeditions except the Meridian Expedition.” Post war: In 1876, he was married in Fillmolre County, Minnesota, to Christina Halverson. Seven children. In 1876, he opened a farm implement business in Elizabeth, Otter Tail County, Minnesota, using his name as “Amund Nelson”. About 1910, he moved into Fergus Falls, Minnesota. Died 5 Jun 1926. Buried at Oak Grove Cemetery in Fergus Falls.
