Fridtjhof Smith-Hald was born in Kristiansand, Norway in 1846. He was a student of Eckersbergs Art School in Oslo and went to Karlsruhe where he was a student of Gude and Riefstahl in 1871. Later, he studied and worked in Dusseldorf, Paris, Bergen, and Antwerp before coming to the U.S. and settling in Chicago, Illinois. He exhibited at the Norse-American Centennial in 1925 in St. Paul, Minnesota. Smith-Hald died in Chicago, Illinois in 1903.
