Sigurd Svendsen was born in Norway in 1887. He worked as a sculptor for Arthur Schultz Co. but also did oil paintings. He designed all sculpture work on the bridges of the Merritt Parkway in New York City. In addition to working on the outside of the Heinz Chapel at the University of Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania, he worked on the Boston Opera House and Metropolitan Theatre (Wang Center). His brother, Knute O. Svendsen, was an artist too, known for his stained glass and wood panel designs. Svendsen died in 1943.
