August Satre was born in Rena, Hedmark, Norway in 1876 and immigrated to the U.S. in 1902. During the 1920s, he lived in Providence, Rhode Island and was a memorial designer. He also belonged to the Providence Art Club and taught fine arts at the Rhode Island School of Design. In 1929, he moved to Brooklyn and continued design work for Greenwood Cemetary before being called upon to draw naval architecture blueprints during WWII. After the war, he taught at a Brooklyn art studio owned by another Norwegian immigrant artist, Thorn Norheim. In 1938, he was part of a group of amateur and semi-professional artists in Brooklyn who organized the Norwegian Arts and Crafts Club with the objective of promoting interest in art and craft among its members and the public through exhibitions, lectures, discussions, and classes. Satre designed the club’s logo, served as Vice President, and taught classes. Satre died in Brooklyn, New York in 1966.
