Bernt Balchen was born in Tveit, Norway in 1899. He became a distinguished World War II Air Force pilot and Arctic Explorer. He is perhaps best known for helping Roald Amundsen prepare the dirigible Norge for the 1926 flight over the North Pole. He was also Richard Byrd’s chief pilot for the first flight over the South Pole. In addition, he served as a technical adviser for Amelia Earhart. Balchen died in 1973.
