Trunk with Vest-Agder style rosemaling.
According to B.T. Pedersen (1934), the trunk was made for his father Peder Tollisen Ryggsaas, whose initials appear on it, by Vorm Mjaavatn. Mjaavatn was a folk artist who carved with his hunting knife. The rosemaling was done either by Ivar or Kjetil Urdal, both famous rosemalers. Pedersen’s initials were added in 1881 by Lars Bertesen Roiseland.
The trunk originally held money and medicine. When Pedersen emigrated in 1890, he brought the trunk. Family history indicates that the trunk was taken by Ozette Native Americans in 1900 near Ozette Lake in Washington state. The trunk was discovered 13 years later in an abandoned Native American fishing hut.
