This website contains information on Civil War soldiers who were born in Norway.

Names of the soldiers are on the left and are in alphabetical order. The names are, in all possible cases, the names the soldier was known by while in the military. They may not be the names such men adopted after discharge. Please see the “Soldiers’ Names” tab for more information about rural Norwegian naming customs and the name changes that often occurred after emigration to the United States.

In cases of men of the same name, the next sorting is by state, using modern postal code and similar abbreviations:

The information is arranged as follows:

1. Name
2. Unit
3. Residence at time of enlistment
4. Place and time of birth, etc…
5. Immigration and other pre-war biographical notes
6. Civil War: (or other war) All military information
7. Post war: All post war biographical information, including pensions granted
8. Sources: Where this soldier’s information came from.

Finally, in quotes, other names and spellings associated with this soldier.
