WASMUTH, John C.

US Navy. Residence: Brooklyn, Kings County, New York. “Johannes Castberg Holmboe Wasmuth” was born in 1842 near Tromso, Norway. Came to America in 1859. Civil War: Enlisted on 9 Jul 1864 as “James Casey” for a three year hitch as a seaman. He was a Marine Soldier. Served on the “North Carolina”, “Brandywine”, “Saugus”, and at the Washington D.C. Navy Yard. Wasmuth was severely wounded at Fort Fisher, near Cape Fear, North Carolina, in January, 1865. A big gun exploded blowing him down into the ship’s engine room. He was unconscious for eleven days. He was discharged from the service 31 Jul 1865. Went back to Norway after the war; then returned to Brooklyn where he died in 1913.
