Enlisted for three years on 8 Sep 1861 at Cross Plains. Mustered 21 Sep 1861 at Madison, Wisconsin. Private. Engaged in the battle of Port Gibson, Mississippi, 1 May 1863; Champion Hills, Mississippi, 16 May 1863; Big Black River Bridge, Mississippi, 17 May 1863; the Siege of Vicksburg and “assault on the works” 22 May 1863; and the siege of Jackson, Mississippi, 18 Jul 1863. Re-enlisted for three years on 4 Jan 1864 at Indianola, Texas. Re-mustered there 13 Feb 1864. Took part in the siege of Blakely, Alabama, and the assault on the works 9 Apr 1865, and was there severely wounded in both legs. Mustered out with his regiment at Mobile, Alabama, 4 Sep 1865. Granted a pension of $3 a month because of the wound to his right leg.
