Born “Tobias Andersen Birkaas” on 26 Mar 1831 at Landvik, Aust-Agder, Norway, son of Anders Aanonsen Toskedal and Targier Ellefsdatter Birkaas. He came to the US with his parents and two siblings in 1848. They came to Manitowoc Rapids, Manitowoc County, Wisconsin. Tobias was married on 6 Aug 1854 to Anlaug Olsdatter Nerison. Five children. Civil War: Farmer. Age 33. Blue eyes, light hair, light complexion, 5’11”. Drafted. Enrolled for one year on 30 Sep 1864 at Manitowoc, Wisconsin. Mustered the same day. Private. Mustered out 5 Jul 1865. Post war: Died 27 Mar 1879 in Hanley Falls, Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota. Buried West Cemetery, Hanley Falls, Yellow Medicine County, Minnesota.
