IA 12th Inf Co G. Residence: Decorah, Winneshiek County, Iowa. Born “Anton Elias Ringstad” on 1 Sep 1837 in Valders, Nord Aurdal, Oppland, Norway. Came to America at age 12 on “Syttende Mai”, which sailed from Bergan about 12 May 1849 and arrived in New York on 26 Jun 1849. Came to Albion Township, Dane County, Wisconsin, and to Madison Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa by 1851. Civil War: Age 24. Enlisted 9 Oct 1861 as Sergeant. Mustered 5 Nov 1861. Private. Missing in battle 6 Apr 1862, Shiloh, Tennessee, Found to be in Libby Prison. Re-enlisted & re-mustered 5 Jan 1864. Promoted First Sergeant on 1 Mar 1865. Commissioned First Lieutenant 20 Apr 1865. Mustered out 20 Jan 1866, Memphis, Tennessee. Post war: In 1885, Anton E. Anderson was living in Calmar, Winneshiek County, and working for a railroad. In 1892, he was living as an invalid in the Soldiers’ Home in Marshalltown, Iowa. He died 7 Sep 1910 and was buried in Decorah Lutheran Cemetery at Decorah.
