Born “Ludvig Christian Emil Berg” on 23 Aug 1838, at Kongsberg, Buskerud, Norway, son of Peter Berg, a Kongsberg merchant, and Karen Sophie Stave. He came to America with his widowed mother and three siblings on “Lyna”, which sailed from Drammen, Buskerud, on 8 Jun 1849 and arrived in New York on 14 Aug 1849. They came to Delafield Township, Waukesha County. Civil War: Musician. Unmarried. Age 24. Hazel eyes, brown hair, dark complexion, 5’10”, stout build. Enlisted for three years on 21 Aug 1862 at Delafield. Mustered 14 Oct 1862 at Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Private. On 14 Oct 1864, he was transferred to the Regimental Band as a prime musician. Post war: He was married at Beaver Dam, Wisconsin, on 29 Oct 1865, to Ellen Lowth. Two children. He moved to Owatonna, Steele County, Minnesota, where he became a moulder, and later an ornamenter and painter for a firm called Lowth & Howe.
