WI 15th Inf Co B. Residence: Neshonoc, La Crosse County, Wisconsin. Born 1 Jan 1839 in Voss, Hordaland, Norway, son of Erik Vikingsen Rjoe and Christi Knudsdatter Bakkethun. Came to America with his parents and two sisters on “Ørnen”, sailing from Bergen and arriving in New York on 2 Aug 1844. Married Brita Sjursdatter Hylle. Civil War: Age 36. Farmer. Blue eyes, light hair, sandy complexion, 5’6”. Enlisted for three years on 5 Jan 1864 at La Crosse, Wisconsin, and mustered there the same day. Private. Joined the company at Knoxville on 19 Feb 1864. Wounded in battle at New Hope Church, Georgia, and sent to hospital. Transferred to Company H on 1 Dec 1864, then to 24th Infantry and later to 13th Infantry, Company I, on 10 Jun 1865. Mustered out 24 Nov 1865.
