Enlisted for three years on 17 Oct 1861 at Cambridge, Wisconsin, and mustered at Madison, Wisconsin, on 13 Feb 1862. Corporal. Killed in the Battle of Stone’s River, Tennessee, 31 Dec 1862. Buried in the National Cemetery there; section C, grave 36. Named Brevet Captain on 4 Apr 1867 with rank from 31 Dec 1862 for courage and bravery displayed during the battle. “He fought with courage despite being seriously wounded in his right leg, and he maintained his position, fighting courageously until he fell down dead, his heart pierced through by a bullet.” Andrew, Ole and Stephen Fosse were brothers.
