WI 15th Inf Co I. Residence: Waupun, Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin. Born 17 Aug 1829 in Gjerpen, Norway. He came to America on “Salvator”, which sailed from Porsgrunn and arrived in New York in July 1843. He came with a group to Ashippen Township, Dodge County, Wisconsin. He was married in 1844 to Johanna Helvig Gregoriusdatter Tufte. Civil War: Age 33. Married. Commissioned Captain on 15 Jan 1862 and mustered at Madison, Wisconsin, on 11 Feb 1862. Buslett cites War Department records, dated 24 May 1892, stating that Gasman was mustered as Captain of Company I, effective from 15 Jan 1862. Captain until Apr 1862. Detached from the company at Mississippi River Island No. 10 on 11 Jun 1862. Listed in post records as having resigned on 7 Dec 1862, but the resignation was not accepted and he was sent back to the 15th Regiment and was assigned to command Company D. Wounded severely in the Battle of Chickamauga, Georgia, 19 Sep 1863. Post war: He went to Clear Lake, Iowa, and then to Mason City, Iowa, where he died in April 1907. He is buried in Elwood Cemetery in Mason City.
