GILBERTSON, Torger

WI 15th Inf Co I. Residence: Scandinavia, Waupaca County, Wisconsin. Born 7 Apr 1829 in Norway. In 1857, he sailed from Christiania [Oslo] and landed at Quebec. Came on to Helvetia Township in Waupaca County, Wisconsin. Worked as a logger until he was able to buy land in Iowa township. Civil War: Age 29. Enlisted for three years on 16 Nov 1861 at Scandinavia and mustered at Madison, Wisconsin, 20 Dec 1861. Designated Corporal 1 Jan 1862. Was with the provision transport from Stevenson, Alabama, in September and October, 1863. Reported sick in July, August, September and October, 1864, and in hospitals in Nashville, Tennessee, and Jeffersonville, Alabama. Became ill on the march through Georgia and was sent back to Atlanta. Mustered out with I Company at Chattanooga, Tennessee, 10 Feb 1865. Post war: On 18 Nov 1871, he married Elizabeth Isler. Two sons, Gustav and Henry Adolph. In 1894, Torger was living on his farm near Iola, Wisconsin. Died 14 Feb 1902 at age 73.
