WI 44th Inf Co C. Residence: Iola, Waupaca County, Wisconsin. Born “Hans Gundersen Romnes” on 6 May 1835 at Holden Sogn, Norway. He was a son of Gunder Jørgensen Romnes and Kari Jonsdatter Kaalstad. He came to America with his parents and siblings on “Salvator”, which sailed from Porsgrunn, Telemark, and arrived in New York on 6 Jul 1844. They came to Waukesha County, Wisconsin. His father died in 1846 and the family,about 1852, moved to Iola. Civil War: Farmer. Age 29. Unmarried. Blue eyes, light hair, light complexion, 5’9”. Enlisted for one year on 29 Oct 1864 at Waupaca, Wisconsin. Enlistment credited to Shields, Dodge County. Mustered 10 Nov 1864 at Madison, Wisconsin. Bounty $100, $33.33 paid. Private. Mustered out with this company on 28 Aug 1865 at Paducah, Kentucky. Post war: On 22 Dec 1865, he was married to Siri Anderson. They lived in Stevens Point, Portage County, Wisconsin. Three sons.
