IA 16th Inf Co I. Residence: Madison Township, Winneshiek County, Iowa. Born “Helge Gundersen Lillemoen” on 23 Nov 1848 in Sigdal, Norway. Came with his parents to Wisconsin in 1853. Moved to Iowa in 1854. Civil War: Age 18. Blue eyes, light hair, light complexion, 5’4½”. Enlisted for one year on 23 Nov 1864 as a substitute for Ole Ellingson of Madison Township, who had been drafted on 15 Nov 1864. Mustered 23 Nov 1864 at Dubuque, Iowa. Private. Mustered out 19 Jul 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky. Post war: Gunderson became Henry G. Lillemoen and, in 1869, he married Ingeborg Stenersdatter Snersrud. They moved to Lillemon, Stony Brook township, Grant County, Minnesota. They had eleven children.
