WI 37th Inf Co C. Residence: Iola, Waupaca County, Wisconsin. Born 12 Nov 1825 in Holla, Telemark, Norway, son of Gunder Jørgensen Romnes and Kari Jonsdatter Kaalstad. The family came to America aboard the “Salvator” which left Porsgrunn, Telemark, and reached New York on 6 Jul 1844. On 14 Jun 1855 he married Anne Vimme. Civil War: Farmer. Age 39. Married. Blue eyes, brown hair, sandy complexion, 5’1½”. Drafted. Enrolled for one year on 5 Nov 1864 at Iola, and mustered there the same day. Private. Post war: The wife of John Gunderson in March 1865 applied for $5 a month in state aid. The commander of company C, on 27 Mar 1865, certified that Gunderson, drafted on 5 Nov 1864, had joined Company C on 11 Dec 1864 and was “present for duty”. Post war: Lived at Iola. Died 8 Feb 1880.
