US Navy. Born 6 May 1855 in Bergen, Norway, son of John Halvorsen and Rebecca. Went to sea at a young age. Came to New York City on “Saga” and immediately enlisted in the US Navy as an ordinary seaman. He served five years and was discharged in 1879. In 1886 he came to Grand Forks County, North Dakota.
