Enlisted for three years on 15 Aug 1862 at Madison, Wisconsin. Mustered 27 Sep 1862 at Madison. Private. “Engaged in every action in which the company has participated. Detailed in the Ambulance Corps from 28 Apr to 1 Oct 1863. Promoted to Corporal on 1 Jun 1864. Reduced to Private on 1 Nov 1864 on account of an excess of non-commissioned officers. Later he declined to be reappointed a Corporal, preferring to perform duty as a clerk. Detailed as a clerk at Brigade headquarters from 6 Dec 1864 to 18 Feb 1865.
