Blue eyes, light hair, light complexion, 5’9”. Enlisted for three years on 31 Dec 1863 at Windsor and mustered at Madison, Wisconsin, 11 Jan 1864. Private. Recruit. Joined K Company at Strawberry Plains, Virginia, 31 Mar 1864. Sick in Atlanta, Georgia, 29 Sep 1864. Became unfit for service and was discharged from the service on 22 Nov 1864 at Whiteside, Tennessee, on orders from General Thomas. Post war: John Hauff was a brother of Captain Henry Hauff, commander of E Company. John Hauff after the war became manager of a big bridge and railroad factory in Chicago.
