HELGESON, Carl

WI 1st Cav Co D. Born in Norway in August 1845. Came to America in 1860. Civil War: Enrolled 14 Sep 1864 at Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Mustered 8 Oct 1864 at Madison, Wisconsin. Private. Discharged from the service 19 Jul 1865 at Edgefield, Tennessee. Post war: On 9 Dec 1870, he married Sigvi “Sarah” Severtsen in Colfax, Wisconsin. In 1871, the couple homesteaded north of Montevideo, Minnesota. They had four children. In 1879, Carl left his family, moved to Campbell, Nebraska, changed his name to Charley Johnson (Jansen), and married a woman who used the names “Mary” and “Jennie”, who had gone there with him from Minnesota. They had five children. Helgeson died 27 Aug 1910, and was buried in the military cemetery at the Presidio, San Francisco, California, grave 1458, west side new addition.
