MN 4th Inf Co H. Residence: Nicollet County, Minnesota. Born 19 Sep 1840 (or 22 Sep 1839) at Aal, Hallingdal, Buskerud, Norway. Came to America with his parents and four siblings on the “Columbo”, which sailed from Havre, France< and reached New York on 29 Aug 1846. They came to Spring Valley Township, Rock County, Wisconsin. At age 17, he settled on a farm near Linden, Brown County, Minnesota. Civil War: Age 22. Enrolled 9 Oct 1861. Mustered 20 Dec 1861. Private. Re-enlisted 1 Jan 1864. Promoted to Corporal. Promoted to Sergeant. Promoted to Brevet (Honorary) Second Lieutenant on 26 Jun 1865. Discharged from the service with his regiment, 19 Jul 1865. Post war: He lived in Madelia, Minnesota. Elected to the Minnesota Legislature in 1877 and to the State Senate in 1879. Married twice. Children.
