ME 3rd Inf Co G. Residence: Waterville, Maine. Born Oct 1837 in Bergen, Hordaland, Norway. Was a sailor but shipwrecked off the Maine coast in 1852. Settled in Waterville, Maine. Enrolled in Waterville College (Colby College). Civil War: Student. First volunteer from Waterville to volunteer. Enlisted and mustered 4 Jun 1861. Private. Taken prisoner at 1st Bull Run and interred at Libby Prison. Taken prisoner at 2nd Bull Run. Paroled and discharged for disability on 12 Feb 1863. Re-enlisted in the Navy and served on the USS Saugus. Postwar: Lived in Waterville, Maine. Opened a bookshop and became a leading businessman. Married Martha “Mattie” Hunt. Died in 1904.
