WI 15th Inf. Residence: Lawrence, Kansas. Born “Sven Olaus Mathiassen Himo” in Overhalla, Nord-Trøndelag, Norway, 10 Mar 1832, a son of Mathias Lorentsen Himo and Elen Svensdatter Rygh. He came to America at age 13, traveling with his parents and two siblings on the “Juno”, arriving in New York from Bergen on 18 Jun 1846. They came to Norway Township, Racine County, Wisconsin. Graduated from Platteville, Wisconsin, Academy and from St. Louis, Missouri, Medical College. He was married on 3 Jul 1857 to Andrea Evensdatter Heg, thus becoming Colonel Hans Heg’s brother-in-law. Civil War: Age 29. On 11 Nov 1861, he enlisted for three years in the Kansas 6th Cavalry, then transferred to the Wisconsin 15th, mustering at Racine County on 4 Feb 1862. He was appointed Regimental Surgeon. He soon became the Brigade Surgeon. On 19 Feb 1863, he was detached to serve at a hospital near Murfreesboro, Tennessee. Was in the Battle of Chickamauga. Resigned 13 Nov 1863, because of poor health. Post war: Went to Lawrence, Kansas. Later moved to Kansas City, Missouri, but in 1880 was back in Lawrence. His wife died there in 1880. He married again to Margaret Gormli. He died 19 Apr 1904 in Kansas City.
