WI 30th Inf Co D. Residence: Martell, Pierce County, Wisconsin. Born “Hans Jacob Hansen Haugen” on 28 Feb 1835 at Biri, Oppland, Norway, son of Hans Iversen Haugen and Marthe Olsdatter Bjugevolden. He came to America with his parents and four siblings on “Fremad”, which sailed from Drammen and arrived in New York 25 Aug 1848. They came to Wisconsin, first to Luther Valley, Rock County; later to Winchester, Winnebago County, and eventually to Buena Vista Township, St. Croix County. He was married on 20 Feb 1861 to Anne Jørgine Pedersdatter Hovde (1844-1902). Civil War: Farmer. Age 26. Married. Blue eyes, light hair, light complexion, 5’8”. Enlisted for three years on 21 Aug 1862 at Martell. Mustered 21 Oct 1862 at Madison, Wisconsin, and designated Corporal. Mustered out on 20 Sep 1865 at Louisville, Kentucky. Post war: He died 4 Sep 1917 at Renville, Minnesota. Buried in Greenwood Cemetery, River Falls, Wisconsin.
