WI 23rd Inf Co I. Residence: Vienna, Dane County, Wisconsin. Born “Karl Johnson Eide” on 13 Oct 1840 at Gulen, Sogn og Fjordane, Norway, son of John Olsen Eide and Gjetlaug Olsdatter Fleische. Came to America with his parents and four siblings on “Dorothea”, which sailed from Bergen and reached New York on 5 Jul 1848. Civil War: Unmarried. Age 22. Enlisted for three years on 9 Aug 1862 at Vienna. Mustered 30 Aug 1862 at Madison, Wisconsin. Corporal. Fought at Vicksburg, Mississippi. Discharged from the service for disability at Millikins Bend, Louisiana, on 3 Apr 1863 due to chronic diarrhea. Post war: Married on 12 Jun 1876 to Helena Richolson. Six children. He became Dane County Register of Deeds. They moved in 1885 to Spring Lake Township, Kingsbury County, South Dakota. Died at age 58 on 29 Aug 1899 at Lake Preston, South Dakota. Death due to stomach ulcers. Buried in Lake White Wood Lutheran Cemetery, Denver Township, Kingsbury County, lot 34, grave 16. His older brother, Ole, served with the South.
