JOHNSON, John Henry

WI 15th Inf Co G. Residence: Primrose, Dane County, Wisconsin. Born “Johan Henrik Johnson” on 18 Jul 1837 on the Fjösne farm in Ætne parish, Bergen diocese, Norway, to Johan Vogt and Susanne Torbjornsdatter. Came to America in 1857 to Perry, Wisconsin. Civil War: Age 24. Unmarried. Enlisted for three years on 4 Nov 1861 at Beloit, Wisconsin. Mustered 13 Dec 1861 at Madison, Wisconsin. Designated Sergeant on 1 Jan 1862. Because he was a layman and without ordination, he could not be a Chaplain. The governor, on 19 Oct 1864, officially commissioned him a Field Chaplain. Mustered out 13 Jan 1865. Post war: He was ordained in the Methodist Episcopal Church and served as a pastor in Coon Prairie, Vernon County, Wisconsin. Married after the war to Anna Frydenlund, who died in 1915.
