Enlisted for three years on 18 Aug 1862 at Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Mustered 25 Oct 1862 at Milwaukee. Bounty $100, $75 still due at muster out. Appointed Corporal on 22 Oct 1862. J. P. Johnson left sick at Helena, Arkansas, 13 Aug 1863. Sick at Memphis, Tennessee, since 28 Aug 1863, according to regimental report of Dec 1863. On detached service as a clerk in medical department at St. Louis, Missouri, 7 May 1864. Reduced from Corporal to the ranks to take effect 1 Jan 1865. Corporal John P. Johnson, on 1 Apr 1865 was transferred to the Veterans Reserve Corps by order of the Secretary of War, and assigned to Company I of the 23rd Regiment.
