Enlisted for three years on 1 Oct 1861 at Manitowoc, Wisconsin, and mustered at Madison, Wisconsin, 29 Dec 1861. Named Corporal 1 Jan 1862. Died 2 Aug 1862 on board a steamboat on the Tennessee River which was taking him to a hospital in Cincinnati, Ohio.
