WI 7th Inf Co A. Residence: Dekorra Township, Columbia County, Wisconsin. Born “Knud Knudsen Naas” on 12 Feb 1838 at Drangedal, Telemark, a son of Knud Knudsen Nass and Aslau Isaksdatter Dal. He came to America with his parents and four siblings on “Bowditch” which sailed from Havre, France, and arrived in New York on 8 Aug 1846. They came to Columbia County. Young Knud took the name John. Civil War: Age 23. Enlisted for three years on 12 Aug 1861 at Lodi, Wisconsin, and mustered 14 Aug 1861 at Madison, Wisconsin. Private. Wounded in the battle of South Mountain, Maryland, on 14 Sep 1862. Discharged from the service 14 Dec 1862 by reason of his wounds. Post war: He married Randy Johnson about 1864. Six children. He died 21 Feb 1908 and was buried at Dekorra, Lodi; stone reads “19 Feb 1838 – 21 Feb 1908”.
