Loeng, Hovel Svendsen

WI 8th Inf Co C. Residence: Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Born in 1821 in Nordre Land, Oppland County, Norway, son of Svend Hovelsen Loeng and Inger Olsdatter Vasslien. Hovel and sister Mari emigrated to the U.S. in 1851. Civil War: Age 35. Unmarried. Enlisted 28 August 1861 at Eau Claire, Wisconsin. Private. Wounded at the Battle of Corinth, Mississippi on 3 October 1862. Died 2 September 1863 at Bear Creek, Mississippi. Buried at Messengers Ford and later moved to cemetery at Vicksburg, grave #1309 in Section F. First Norwegian from Nordre Land killed in the Civil War.
