WI 15th Inf Co B. Residence: Cambridge, Dane County, Wisconsin. Born “Bernhard J. Madsen” in Lillehammer, Norway, on 18 Aug 1840. He was the son of Doctor Bernhard Madson. Came to America in 1848 to Cambridge. Civil War: Age 22. Unmarried. Enlisted for three years on 1 Oct 1861 at Madison, Wisconsin, and mustered there on 18 Jan 1862. Private. Promoted to Sergeant. Taken prisoner at Chickamauga, Georgia, 20 Sep 1863. Held at Libby Prison, Richmond, Virginia. Moved to Andersonville Prison. Exchanged out of Andersonville at Savannah, Georgia, on 14 May 1864. Mustered out in Madison 11 Jan 1865. Post war: Lived in Primrose, Wisconsin.
