Born “EndredSjujrsen Indre Svindland” on 19 Nov 1842 at Skånevik, Hordaland, Norway, son of Sjur Nielsen Indre Svindland and Gjer Endresdatter Haugen. He came to America with his parents and four siblings on “Favoriten”, which sailed from Stavanger, Rogaland, on 16 May 1849, and arrived in New York on 28 Jun 1849, but was held in quarantine until 4 July. They came first to Saratoga Township, Grundy County, Illinois, and by 1855 to Kendall, Kendall County. Civil War: Farmer. Age 21. Unmarried. Blue eyes, brown hair, light complexion, 5’10”. Enlisted for three years on 8 Aug 1862 at Lisbon. Mustered 8 Sep 1862 at Camp Butler, Illinois. Private. Mustered out with his company on 12 Jul 1865 at Mobile, Alabama. Post war: Married on 20 Sep 1866 to Martha Knudsdatter Ersland (1843-1908). Seven children. Moved in 1866 to Cambridge, Polk County, Iowa, where he became an auctioneer and a farmer.
