WI 46th Inf Co B. Residence: Amherst, Portage County, Wisconsin. Born “Johan Nielsen Løberg” on 2 Aug 1838 at Gjerpen, Telemark, Norway, son of Niels Torbjørnsen Løberg and Berthe Thorbjørnsdatter. He came to America with his parents and six siblings on “Valhalla”, which sailed from Skien, Telemark, 2 Jun 1849 and arrived in New York on 11 Aug 1849. They came to Ashippen Township, Dodge County, Wisconsin. Johan was married on 11 Oct 1859 to Anne Marie Knudsdatter Bratsbergskougan (1836-1921). Eleven children. Johan and Anne moved about 1860 to Portage County. Civil War: Farmer. Age 27. Married. Gray eyes, brown hair, light complexion, 5’10”. Enlisted for one year on 7 Feb 1865 at Amherst. Enlistment credited to Alto, Fond du Lac County. Mustered 22 Feb 1865 at Madison, Wisconsin. Bounty $100, $33.33 paid. Private. On detached service at railroad blockhouse 38 since 20 Jun 1865. Mustered out with this Company on 27 Sep 1865 at Nashville, Tennessee. Post war: He died 19 Dec 1920.
