Born “Niels Sjursen Indre Svindland” in Norway, on 6 Sep 1840, at Skånevik, Hordaland, Norway, son of Sjur Niedlsen Indre Svindland and Gjer Endresdatter Haugen. He came to America with his parents and four siblings on “Favoriten”, which sailed from Stavanger, Rogaland, on 16 May 1849, and arrived in New York on 28 Jun 1849, but was held in quarantine until 4 July. They came first to Saratoga Township, Grundy County, Illinois, and by 1855 to Kendall, Kendall County. Civil War: Farmer. Age 22. Unmarried. Blue eyes, light hair, light complexion, 5’10”. Enlisted for three years on 8 Aug 1862 at Lisbon. Mustered 8 Sep 1862 at Camp Butler, Illinois. Private. Promoted to Sergeant. Mustered out with his Company on 12 Jul 1865 at Mobile, Alabama. Married on 17 Mar 1863 to Anna Eriksdatter Sætre (1843-1913). Post war: Became a farmer at Helmar, Illinois. Fourteen children. Died 15 Sep 1923, buried in Helmar Lutheran Cemetery.
