Neighbors signed a petition dated 11 Dec 1862 to Wisconsin Governor Edward Salomon asking that this soldier “Ole Nelson Brown of Comp D in the twenty-third Reg’n of volunteers age 24 years inlisted August 21st 1862 at Blue Mounds” be discharged from the service so that he could help his father Nils Oleson Brown maintain his family. The petition states that the elder Brown had not had any work for twenty years and was unable to support his family. It was signed by 27 men.
