Civil War: Age 22. Farmer. Married. Blue eyes, sandy hair, rosy complexion, 5’6”. Enlisted 30 Sep 1861. Private. Promoted to Corporal 5 Oct 1863. Re-enlisted for three years and re-mustered on 2 Jan 1864 at Natchez, Mississippi. While on home leave on 13 Apr 1864 he married Marthea Jacobsdatter. Promoted to Sergeant 1 Feb 1865. Mustered out 16 Jul 1865. Naturalized 13 Dec 1865. Post war: Adopted the surname “Grinder”. Died 5 Jan 1905 at Daleyville, Wisconsin; his widow, Marthea, died 7 Mar 1931.
