Born “Tobias Christian Olsen Kjelland” on 19 Nov 1835 at Bringsjord, Lyngdal prestegjeld, Farsund, Vest Agder, Norway, son of Ole Jacobi Torkelsen Kjelland and Inger Serine Olsdatter. He came to America with his parents and six siblings on “Duo Frates”, which sailed from Farsund and arrived in New York on 2 Jul 1849. They came to Christiana Township, Dane County, Wisconsin, and by 1860 were in Township 105 in Winona County, Minnesota. Civil War: Age 28. Enrolled 27 Sep 1864. Mustered 8 Oct 1864. Private.
