WI 6th Inf Co B. Residence: Hamburg, Vernon County, Wisconsin. Born “Mathias Olsen Galtestad” in 1831 at Biri, Oppland, Norway, son of Ole Nilsen Øvre Galtestad and Gudbjør Andersdatter. He came to America probably on “Flora”, which sailed from Christiania on 15 Jun 1849 and reached New York on 23 Aug 1849. He came to Hamburg Township, Vernon County. He was married on 12 Aug 1857 to Christiana Sveum (?-1928). Nine children. Civil War: Farmer. Married. Age 34. Gray eyes, brown hair, dark complexion, 5’5½”. Drafted. Enrolled for one year and mustered on 21 Sep 1864 at La Crosse, Wisconsin. Private. Joined Company B on 27 Nov 1864. Wounded in action at the Battle of Hatcher’s Run, Virginia, 7 Feb 1865. Discharged from the service 27 Jun 1865 at Harvey hospital, Madison, Wisconsin, for disability due to the wounds received in battle. Post war: Died 2 Apr 1903.
