OYEN, Anthon Odin

WI 15th Inf. Residence: Chicago, Illinois. Born in Trondhjem, Norway, 8 Oct 1841. Was pharmacist in Bodo, Norway. Came to America in 1861. Civil War: Age 21. Enlisted for three years on 8 Oct 1861. Private. Appointed Hospital Steward on 18 Nov 1861 and mustered at Madison, Wisconsin, 13 Feb 1862. Served as Hospital Pharmacist. Taken prisoner in Battle of Chickamauga, Georgia, on 20 Sep 1863, and spent 18 months in Southern prisons, including Andersonville. Exchanged out of Andersonville on 1 Apr 1865. Mustered out Madison, Wisconsin, 25 May 1865 at Madison. Post war: Returned to Chicago. Spent 20 years in the city police force. Lived until 1892; died at home of a heart attack.
