WI 37th Inf Co A. Residence: Delavan, Walworth County, Wisconsin. Born 18 Jun 1832 at Bamble, Telemark, Norway, son of Peder Olsen Herum and Ingeborg Larsdatter. He came to America with his parents and five siblings on the “Sultan”, which sailed out of Havre, France, and arrived in New York 14 Aug 1846. They came first to Muskego, Racine County, Wisconsin, and then moved to Walworth County. Married on 24 Mar 1855 to Isabella Anderson (Annunson?). Civil War: Blacksmith. Married. Age 32. Blue eyes, light hair, light complexion, 5’9”. Enlisted for three years on 23 Mar 1864 at Delavan. Enlistment credited to Spring Prairie, Walworth County. Mustered 12 Apr 1864 at Madison, Wisconsin. Private. Taken prisoner in action before Petersburg, Virginia, 30 Jul 1864. His name is not on the company roster of 31 Dec 1864. Roster of 28 Feb 1865 lists him as “missing in action since July 30, ‘64”; and states that he is still owed $240 of his $300 enlistment bounty. Paroled 21 Feb 1865 and exchanged 25 Mar 1865.
