Enlisted for three years on 25 Jan 1862 at Decorah and mustered in Madison, Wisconsin, 11 Feb 1862. Private. Left behind sick in Iuka, Mississippi, 20 Aug 1862. Became unfit for service and was discharged for disability at Jackson, Tennessee, 9 Oct 1862. Apparently enlisted again on 30 Mar 1864 in IA 12th Inf Co G. using the name “Lars L Stalim”. Mustered 28 Apr 1864. Private. Mustered out 20 Jan 1866 at Memphis, Tennessee. Post war: Was granted a pension of $24.99 per month. Died at age 75 on 12 Nov 1918 and was buried at the State Home Cemetery in Hot Springs, South Dakota, lot 18, grave 57. Grave marker shows his unit as IA 12th Inf Co G.
