THOMASSEN, Charles H.

NY Navy. Born in Lyse near Stavanger in 1841. Came to America as a sailor in 1862. Civil War: After the war, he became a butcher, well-known in the Eighties and Nineties as “Butch” Thompson. For many years he owned a saloon at 31st and Broadway, known as “The White Elephant” (at 1243 Broadway, corner of 31st St). Became wealthy as a bookmaker at race tracks. Sources: (Rygg p52)
