WI 15th Inf Co D. Residence: Oconomowoc, Waukesha County, Wisconsin. Born “Svend Torjussen Sannes” on 31 Oct 1832. From Sætersdalen, Valle, Aust Agder, Norway. Son of Torjus Svendsen Sannes and Torbjørg Torjusdatter. Svend came to America with his parents and two siblings on “Frithjof”, which sailed from Kragerø, Telemark on 26 May 1849 and arrived in New York on 6 Jul 1849. They came to Dodge County, Wisconsin. Both his parents died of cholera in 1849, and the children were raised by an aunt and uncle. Civil War: Age 19. Unmarried. Enlisted for three years on 11 Nov 1861 at Oconomowoc. Mustered 8 Dec 1861 at Madison, Wisconsin. Private. Was with the commissary supply team for a time in June and July 1862. Missing in battle of Stone’s River, Tennessee, 31 Dec 1862; taken prisoner. Returned 11 Jan 1863. Was an escort with the provision transport from Stevenson on 13 Oct 1863. Sick in Chattanooga, Tennessee, 28 Nov 1863. Mustered out with Company on 13 Feb 1865 at Chattanooga. Post war: Svend married, April 1866, Julia Osofson. They lived near Iola and Scandinavia, Wisconsin. Two children. In 1893, he was living at Sheridan, Wisconsin. He married a second time to Anna Thompson. No children.
