Enlisted for three years on 12 Sep 1861 at Racine and mustered 17 Sep 1861 at Madison, Wisconsin. Private. On 15 Oct 1861, he was arrested as a deserter from Company D of the Illinois 39th Infantry Regiment and held at Benton Barracks, St. Louis, Missouri, he having been duly mustered into service in that company in August 1861.
